[ARCHIVED] Public meetings scheduled to discuss half-cent sales tax

McPHERSON — On Aug. 2, 2022, citizens of McPherson will head to the polls. Among the various items being addressed, the City of McPherson is asking voters to consider a renewal of the second half-cent sales tax, which was implemented in 2013 and sunsets in 2023.  

To address this vote, the City has scheduled eight public meetings during the next few weeks for citizens to gain more information about what the question means as well as have the opportunity to speak with city officials about the purpose of the sales tax. 

The meetings will consist of a 20-minute presentation, followed by a question-and-answer session with various representatives from the different city departments. 

All meetings will take place in Citizens Hall at the McPherson Community Building, with the first two being Thursday, June 23, at 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. 

Meeting schedule

June 23 - 10 a.m. & 5:30 p.m.
 June 28 - Noon & 5:30 p.m.
 June 30 – Noon
 July 7 - 5:30 p.m.
 July 21 – Noon
 July 28 - 5:30 p.m.

The special question on the Aug. 2 ballot reads as follows:

Shall the City of McPherson, Kansas be authorized to impose a one-half percent (0.50%) Citywide retailers' sales tax (the "Sales Tax"), the revenues to be derived therefrom to be used for the purpose of financing the costs of the following and related expenditures:
 (a)    70% of the revenue from the Sales Tax to finance street and drainage improvements; (b)    20% of the revenue from the Sales Tax to finance public lands and facilities;  (c) 5% of the revenue from the Sales Tax to finance law enforcement projects; and  (d) 5% of the revenue from the Sales Tax to finance museum facilities and support; with the collection of the Sales Tax to commence on the expiration of the existing 0.50% Citywide retailers' sales tax approved at an election held in 2012 to finance various capital improvements within the City (which is expected to be October 1, 2023), and to expire ten (10) years after its commencement; all pursuant to the provisions of K.S.A. 12-187 et seq., as amended?
