Holes in the roadway are referred to as "potholes" and can vary in size and shape. Potholes are caused by the expansion and contraction of water that has entered into the ground underneath the pavement. When the water freezes and melts repeatedly, the pavement weakens and continues to crack due to the gaps or voids below. Vehicles traveling along the pavement contribute to overall road fatigue and cause the break down of the poorly supported asphalt in the pothole area.
When potholes are discovered on public roadways, Street Department employees provide a temporary solution by patching the potholes until permanent repairs can be made.
