Planning & Zoning Department:

The Planning and Zoning Administrator is the first point of contact when new development questions arise. This individual is responsible for the Planning and Zoning Dept, and serves as the primary administrator for zoning, subdivision and floodplain issues. A key role includes supervising and assisting the Planning Commission and the Board of Zoning Appeals.

Planning Commission

The Planning Commission is comprised of nine members appointed by the Mayor and City Commission and is charged with an annual review of the comprehensive plan, which guides all development in McPherson. They also review zoning and subdivision regulations and make recommendations for additions, deletions or revisions as needed. Other responsibilities include reviewing site plans and conducting public meetings about zone changes, plats and annexations. The Planning Commission meets the first Tuesday of each month, 7 p.m., at 400 E. Kansas. All meetings are open to the public.

Board of Zoning Appeals

The Board of Zoning Appeals (BAZ) is comprised of seven members appointed by the Mayor and City Commission and is responsible for holding public hearings on variances and conditional uses. Action is required when projects do not strictly comply with the City's zoning requirements. Procedures include notifying property owners within 200 feet of a proposed project and publicizing the proposed project in the local newspaper. The Board of Zoning Appeals meets the fourth Thursday of each month as needed, 7 p.m., at 400 E. Kansas.
