Park Department Strives for Lawn Sustainability

OakGrovePark5_2017

The McPherson Park Department has begun maintenance to improve the quality and sustainability of lawns in local parks. Grant Rardon, park turf maintenance specialist, recommends a lower maintenance turf and is overseeing the process. Efforts include nurturing a drought-tolerant grass called Bermuda. Bermuda grass grows well in sunny locations and requires less water. It only needs to be fertilized once a year and mowed no more than once a week.

Chemicals have been sprayed at Countryside Park, Homeside Park and Hess Park to eliminate the weeds while stunning the fescue. This approach will allow the Bermuda grass to grow freely during the next 30-60 days. Plans include applying this method to non-irrigated parks citywide. The end result will be attractive park lawns requiring less maintenance.
