Mayor Tom Brown is a visionary and attributes his recent leadership award to the efforts of City staff members and the local community. “I appreciate the award, but it’s really a recognition of a very unique and successful community,” he said. On October 8, the League of Kansas Municipalities presented Brown with the E.A. Mosher Excellence in Local Government Award. The recognition is designed to honor excellence and leadership at the highest level.“Relationships are built public to public,” said Brown in reference to the invaluable relationships the City of McPherson has developed with the county, surrounding communities and the state. He also complimented the other commissioners for supporting various community programs. But most importantly, Brown praised the citizens of McPherson. “You can’t be a good leader, if you don’t have good followers,” he stressed.“Many of the things we have done – the sales tax renewal, fixed roads, water utility – all those things have been embraced by the community,” said Brown. He also noted the importance of community youth. “I hope that we are working for the next generation.” Brown’s role as a statesman includes listening to student concerns while visiting elementary schools, McPherson Middle School and high school government classes.“Our youth are the ones that are going to have to carry the torch in the not too distant future,” he said. “Let’s give them a good platform to build upon.”
