The Lakeside Park Bandshell, built in 1939, was renamed the August San Romani Bandshell in 1964. San Romani directed the McPherson high school and municipal bands from 1925 to 1955. He took the municipal band to the Chicago World's Fair in 1933 and is remembered for bringing "honor and distinction" to the City of McPherson.
Now, more than 75 years old, the historic August San Romani Memorial Bandshell is in need of repair. Plans include power washing all previously painted surfaces, sealing all masonry cracks, replacing concrete steps, removing abandoned outlets and repairing the concrete deck floor. The estimated cost for all repairs is more than $50,000.
The Bandshell is a popular location for community events including Movies in the Park, band concerts, May Fete activities and festivals. Because of the positive impact the Bandshell has on the overall community, the Park Department encourages all residents to promote the renovation of the Bandshell.
Tax-deductible donations are currently being accepted. Checks made payable to City of McPherson August San Romani Memorial Band Shell Donation Fund can be sent to McPherson City Offices, 400 E. Kansas, McPherson, KS 67460.
The Bandshell project is yet another great example of how the City of McPherson and its citizens work together to meet community needs. For more information about the Bandshell renovation, call 620.245.2535.
