The City of McPherson Kansas is currently recruiting qualified applicants for the position of full time Fire Chief. This position reports directly to the Mayor in a strong Mayor-Commission form of government. McPherson is located in central Kansas, 30 miles south of Salina and 50 miles north of Wichita along the I-135 corridor. McPherson, population 13,396, is a progressive community. The McPherson Fire department is a combination department and is the only career department in the county. We are a city department that provides fire, first response medical and Haz-Mat services to our community. We also contract with 2.5 townships to provide fire services which make our initial response area 90 square miles. In addition we contract to McPherson County to provide Haz-Mat response.
Qualifications:
Experience: Ten or more years of fire fighting experience, with five or more years of supervisory fire fighting experience is required. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within one year of employment.
Education: A high school diploma or GED and a technical degree or some college credit in Fire Science or a related field is required. A bachelor’s degree in fire science or related field and completion of the Executive Fire Officer program is highly preferred. This employee must be certified in emergency medical care, Cause and Origin Investigation, and have extensive emergency operations training. A valid Kansas Driver’s License (K.D.L.) is also required.
Technical Skills: A thorough knowledge of fire suppression techniques, safety procedures, Fire & Life Safety Code Enforcement, and personnel management is required. This employee must be able to operate computers, telephone systems, two-way radios, and firefighting equipment. The ability to prepare reports and memos, to understand and anticipate problems, to understand and develop department policies and procedures, and to interpret written instructions, manuals, reports, local, state, and federal fire codes, and department files is required. This employee should possess excellent public relation, supervisory, organizational, managerial, oral and written communication skills. Employee should have knowledge of preparing and executing a budget.
The Salary range for the Fire Chief position is $54,700 - $72,924. Beginning salary is dependent on experience and qualifications. Benefits Include: KP&F State Retirement, nine paid holidays, vacation, sick leave, birthday leave, single or family health insurance plans, optional group life insurance, and availability of a 457 deferred compensation plan.
